He once worked in Kenya for Olympic legend Kip Keino, before graduating with a BSc in PE Sports Science and Recreation Management from Loughborough University, where he was captain of the top British students cross country team. He became a journalist, working in Scotland, Paris, Newcastle upon Tyne, Basingstoke and Bournemouth where he also edited the outdoors section of the Daily Echo newspaper. During this time, he played semi-professional first team rugby for Northern RFC, Basingstoke RFC, Complutense University in Madrid and Vincennes FCR in Paris, as well as for Northumberland County, as a winger and full back. He also raced dinghies in Poole harbour and completed several triathlons.
After sustaining a rugby head and neck injury, he returned to his first love-running and has since renewed and developed his love for wild running (running in upland, moorland, downs, forests, coast and farm trails). After walking across Spain in 2008, he had a reawakening of sorts, quitting his job as a journalist to explore the Andes, before returning to Devon where he set up Wild Running as a social enterprise.
